What is GNOME?

GNOME Logo

GNOME is a free, attractive, powerful, fully integrated, and easy-to-use desktop environment, and an associated comprehensive suite of applications. The FreeBSD GNOME Project is a team of committers and users that brings GNOME to FreeBSD.

The major components of GNOME are:

  • The GNOME desktop: An easy to use window-based environment for users.
  • The GNOME development platform: A rich collection of tools, libraries, and components to develop powerful applications on Unix.
  • The GNOME Office: A set of office productivity applications.

For more information about GNOME, check out the GNOME Project's "What is GNOME?" page.

State of the port

GNOME for FreeBSD is currently supported on 4.9, 4.10, 5.2.1, -STABLE, and -CURRENT. Most of GNOME has been ported to FreeBSD, but there is still plenty left to be done!

Simple solutions to build problems - quickly!

GNOME is simple and easy to build using FreeBSD ports, but there are caveats of which not everyone is aware. If GNOME -- or anything that uses GNOME libraries -- is not building the way it should, simply give the new gnomelogalyzer.sh tool a log of the failed build, and let the gnomelogalyzer figure out what's wrong and how to fix it.
