はアーカイブの中身のインデックスを生成し、アーカイブ中に格納します。
インデックスは、再配置可能なオブジェクトファイルであるアーカイブの
メンバによって定義されている、シンボルのリストです。

とすると、このインデックスのリストを見ることができます。

このようなインデックスを持ったアーカイブは、ライブラリへのリンクを
